Art of the Final Farewell: The Gravestones of Cape Cod

WHEN
Thursday, April 01, 2010 to Sunday, October 31, 2010
WHERE
American History Museum

The wealth of fascinating gravestones on Cape Cod has received an increased amount of attention recently, particularly with the publication of a critically-acclaimed book on the subject in 2006. Once neglected and overlooked, gravestones are now recognized both as historical resources and fine examples of folk art.

Visitors can explore the art of the carver through photographs and rubbings of the earliest stones of the 1600s and 1700s (which were imported to the Cape mostly from Boston and Plymouth County), and learn about the development of a local carving industry in the nineteenth century. All major carving styles and their symbolism - including winged skulls, winged faces and the classical urn and willow motifs - will be explored. In addition, a special section of interesting - and often humorous - epitaphs from Cape Cod stones will be included. Don't forget to take home your own gravestone art by rubbing reproduction tympanums.

Heritage is collaborating with the author of the above-mentioned book on the exhibit, and he will be visiting the museum to do an adult lecture in the fall.
