Carved in Stone ~ Historical Cemetery Tour

Let Heritage’s Director of Collections and Exhibits, Jennifer Madden, lead you on a tour of three fascinating graveyards related to Art of the Final Farewell: The Gravestones of Cape Cod on view in the American History Museum through October 31. The program will begin with a brief introduction to Cape Cod cemeteries at the museum, then participants will drive their own cars to visit the oldest cemeteries in the area - Lothrop Hill, Cobb’s Hill (both in Barnstable) and the Yarmouth Ancient Cemetery (in continuous use since 1639). During each walking tour Ms. Madden will point out the important images carved on the gravestones and read some interesting and humorous epitaphs. The program will conclude with a picnic snack featuring coffee and angel’s food or devil’s food cupcakes and time for questions. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress weather appropriately. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be rescheduled for Saturday, September 25.
Registration is required by September 10. Fee: Members $10, Non-Members $15.
