Sandwich, Cape Cod, MA (April 2010) – Heritage Museums & Gardens will celebrate National Public Gardens Day, Friday, May 7, from 10 am to 5 pm. Enjoy lectures, tours and learn about the important role that public gardens play in promoting environmental stewardship and education.

One of Heritage’s new gardens, an English Cottage Garden created during the 40th anniversary, will be the focus of an exciting lecture by Maria Hickey of Burgess Botanical Gardens, Falmouth, at 11 am. Ms. Hickey will share tips on achieving sequential blooms, textures, structures, plant combinations and working with color. The garden at the Heritage Museums & Gardens front entrance was designed by Burgess Botanical Gardens to honor Trustee JeJe Pierce of Woods Hole, and participants in this lecture will be able to view early blooms on the day of the talk. The lecture will be held in the American History Museum and will inspire, encourage, and motivate participants to create a charming Cottage Garden of their own.

A walking tour to explore Heritage's Unique Horticultural Highlights hosted by Jeanie Gillis, Director of Horticulture, will be held at 2 pm. Ms. Gillis will answer horticultural questions from participants. Plants that will be in bloom on the grounds that day include: Blue Baron Rhododendron, Rosebud Azaleas, daffodils, tulips, Pear Bush and early rhododendron and azaleas. Please meet at the main entrance to take part in this fascinating and informative tour of the living collections on the grounds of the museum. Both the lecture and tour are free with museum admission.
