Sandwich, Cape Cod, MA (July 16, 2010) - Heritage Museums & Gardens, will exhibit the Lost Heroes Art Quilt, a tribute to the men and women who have given their lives in service to our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan, on August 4 – 10, from 10 am – 5 pm in the Art Museum. The quilt will then travel to the Lowell Quilt Festival in Lowell, MA. The show will open with a reception featuring light refreshments on Wednesday, from 2 – 4 pm.

The dramatic, mixed media fabric artwork was created by artist Julie Feingold. The quilt features 82 heroes who reflect the diversity of America – 50 in the central quilt representing each state in the U. S. and 32 around the border. A photograph and poignant words describing the person’s unique personality, dreams, plans, interests and hopes appear around each hero’s square on the Quilt, permanently memorializing each life.

The Lost Heroes Art Quilt was dedicated at the Weekend of Remembrance in Washington D.C. last September and was on display on the west lawn of the U. S. Capitol during the Time of Remembrance Ceremony. It spent its inaugural week at the Arlington Nation Cemetery Visitors Center; other venues include Women in the Army Museum, National Museum of the Marine Corps, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, and the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden. The quilt will arrive in Boston, on July 30, after being displayed in Hawaii, and will travel to Heritage Museums & Gardens for the exhibition.

“To me the Massachusetts block symbolically holds each one of our hometown heroes who volunteer to protect us and our country, yesterday today and tomorrow. Those unique men and women who know that pledging that oath could very well cost them their life and still…they bravely raise their hand. The Massachusetts block of the quilt is not about just one single warrior…the square stands for each of the one hundred and thirty three BRAVE and dearly loved heroes lost by our commonwealth. Daughters and Sons who have given their lives to protect our freedom while generously offering it to the people of Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Kae McGuire, Proud Gold Star Mom of PFC Daniel A. C. McGure USMC killed in action August 14, 2008 in Iraq, at a ceremony at the State House, on April 20.
